Alovestoryplayedoutagainstabackdropofpoliticalandreligiousupheaval.AttheendoftheSecondWorldWar,38yearoldcareersoldierGianSinghresignshiscommissionwiththeBritishIndianArmyandreturnstohischildhoodvillage,neartheborderwithPakistan.Hauntedbythememoriesofwar,heseeksaquietlifeoffarming,solitudeandprayer.HispeaceisshatteredinAugust1947,however,whenIndiaisgrantedindependence.AnewborderisdrawnbetweenHindudominatedIndiaandMuslimdominatedPakistan,andtheregionistornapartbymassacresfueledbyancientanimosities.Inthemidstofonesuchmassacre,GianfindsNaseem,a17yearoldMuslimgirl,andtakesherunderhisprotection.Theygraduallyfindthemselvesdrawntoeachotherbut,astheirremarkablestoryplaysout,theobstaclestotheirhappinessproveallbutinsurmountable.
